Active Ownership
The Active Ownership strategies are built on the belief that companies with active and engaged shareholders are more likely to generate superior long‑term returns.
The core focus of the strategies is therefore to invest in concentrated portfolios of European and Japanese companies that are regarded as receptive to engagement, focusing on fundamentally sound businesses with significant upside potential over a three-to-five-year time horizon. We =see our role as long‑term, insightful owners, working with Boards and management teams to help realise that value.
Strategic engagement
At the core of our approach to unlock value is a structured process of constructive and strategic engagement, what we refer to as active ownership. Engagement focuses on governance, strategy and capital allocation, capital structure, operational excellence, environmental and social factors and interactions with capital markets, targeting issues that can be remedied or improved by the company.
Long-term time horizon
Both strategies are managed on a three-to-five-year investment horizon reflecting the time needed for strategic, operational and governance changes to be considered, implemented and recognised by the market. Our long‑term horizon helps us to weather short‑term volatility and stay focused on the company fundamentals that underpin value. In addition, executing engagement agendas over time help drive sustainable improvements in business fundamentals and value.
Deep fundamental research
The concentrated nature of the funds enables detailed, bottom‑up fundamental research, which underpins investment decisions and the team’s strategic engagement. This includes in‑depth analysis of business quality, value‑creation potential and “change enablers”.
European Active Ownership
Europe is the second largest regional equity market globally. The European Focus Fund invests in a small number of European small and mid‑cap companies with attractive core businesses and limited downside risk, where there is a significant opportunity to create additional value by addressing company‑specific issues. The team seeks to increase shareholder value through constructive and strategic engagement with management teams, corporate boards and, where appropriate, other shareholders on governance, strategy, capital allocation and market communication, with the aim of achieving long term outperformance.
